Freelance Game Developer

HUD or User Interface Artist

Artists in this category create the layer which is applied over the game giving the player important information and often also the various menu screens. Typically HUD (heads up display) artists use Adobe Photoshop to produce assets.

The important factor in this role beyond creating visually interesting and relevant HUD´s and menus is to understand principles of usability. Often graphic designers who have worked on website production understand these principles and are able to create HUD’s and menus which aren’t just good looking but also intuitive for the player.

Of all the roles in art game development this is an under served example and good artists capable of producing pretty and usable HUD’s and menus are in great demand.

Getting a HUD or User Interface Artist Job

You will need a portfolio which shows your ability to create HUD´s, menus and user interfaces. This can include web sites and other relevant examples which follow the same principles of usability.

It is also important to remember to try and show an ability to nail different styles. You may want to produce several example HUD’s for the same product to show this off.

It is important to have a website which you can point potential employers at to show off your work. Never include any half-finished or sub-standard work in your portfolio or website, it is better to have a small range of finished high quality examples than a large range of low quality or unfinished examples. This may seem obvious but many people make this mistake and your better quality examples may be discounted if you include any work that is below par.
